Carolyn Burt's 5th graders

Note: Last year Carolyn Burt placed an announcement on the Internet looking for collaborators for a project related to the 13 colonies. I answered the request for participation and worked on the project with her last year. This year, we are fine tuning it as we do it again. Carolyn Burt's class has populated a middle colony in the Pennsylvania area called Newportia and my class has populated the Massachusetts Bay Colony. We exchange challenges. The classes work as a team to solve the situation related to 1700s English colonies without changing history. (Marjorie)
Lisa's Arrival - Thursday, March 27, 1997
Ms. Duby's Class and Massachusetts Bay Colony,
Looney Lisa Ladybug arrived today safely in Maple Valley, Washington. Students were very excited to greet the Massachusetts Bay Colony representative. Looney Lisa arrived just in time to hear the letters from the King and participate in a lively discussion and debate as to the fairness of the Stamp Act. Lisa sat at the desk of our Ukranian student, Sergey and listened intently as the Loyalists debated the Patriots. I am afraid that our rebels will not comply with the King's latest orders and are talking of resistance and even independence. The Loyalists call them traitors and they may soon feel the wrath of the King if they do not sign a letter of apology. They appear to stand steadfast in their beliefs of liberty and freedom.
Mandy reports: I took Lisa Ladybug to lunch with me. I waited for lunch in the lunch
line and when we got it she and I ate applesauce. At recess I introduced Lisa to the Principal, Mr. Morgan. We also did the dance, the Bunny Hop, out on the playground field. We had fun at recess today. Lisa also met 5th graders from other classes.
Lisa went home for the night with Angie: When Looney Lisa and I got home, I found a bed for Lisa. Then we went to my old school in Renton. We saw all of my old friends. After that we went to my Grandma and Grandpa's house and did a puzzle while watching T.V. Then at 5:00 P.M. we went to my dentist appointment. After that we went out for
pizza! Then we went home and I did my homework while Lisa watched. We went to bed after that.

Friday, March 28 - Lisa spent the day with Nicole Palmer: Today Lisa did the Bunny Hop with us at recess and played soccer. Then we got so hyper that the recess teacher made us calm down. Whitney, Sam, Keni, and everyone else got to hold Looney Lisa Ladybug.
The weekend Lisa Ladybug visited C.J. (Christopher) De Sisto.
Friday, March 28, 1997 - When we were riding home on the bus, we sat by my friend Alex. When we got home we went on the computer to check my E-mail and I talked to some friends on AOL too. After that, we went to my room to clean it since it was a big mess. We went outside and my brother and I rode bikes. Then we played horse and he won. We went inside and watched TV and played games on the computer. After that we had dinner. We had spaghetti. Then we watched TV and had cookies. We watched TV until 10:00 P.m. and we went to bed. We had to go to bed early because one of our alpacas was due to have a baby soon.
March 29, 1997 - When we got up we found my cat on my bed playing around with Lisa
and he had fun. Then we did the usual thing for a Saturday morning, slept in, ate Pop Tarts and watched T.V. Then we went outside to do our chores. We have to clean the carport, pick up the yard, and tend to the alpacas. Then we came in to have lunch. We ate tuna and cookies. Then we went back outside and played with my R/C car. Then we came in and watched the movie, "The Sandlot." Outside we built a fence. When we got finished, we went and built a gate for another fence. When we were done my brothers, my dad, and I went out to Little Caesar's for pizza. When we were waiting, we went to Albertson's to buy some things for Easter. Then we went home and had dinner and we had cake. We all watched "Fire Birds" until 10:00 p.m. and we went to bed.
March 30, 1997 - We woke up at 5:30 A.M. and looked for eggs around the house for
the family hunt. Our baskets were full of candy and a 16 oz. chocolate bunny. When my brothers woke up, we all searched for the eggs. I got the most. Then we went outside and harnessed up the alpacas and walked them around the yard for a while. Then we went inside and watched TV. In about an hour my Aunt Cindy came. Then my cousin Kelli came. We all went up to watch the alpacas and our alpaca didn't have its baby. We went back inside and watched TV and right in the middle of the movie we were watching the power went out. (There was a huge wind storm.) We had a generator, but it was still in the box. My cousin lives in Fairwood and they had power, so she took the lasagna to her house and cooked it. Then my grandma came and we got more candy. My
aunt made a salad. My dad cooked a huge ham, and my cousin brought the lasagna back and we had dinner. Then we talked and they all went home. We didn't do the dishes because we didn't know how long our hot water would last since the power was out. So we listened to the portable radio and went to bed.
March 31, 1997 - When I woke up it was 6:00 a.m. and the power was back. We fixed
all the clocks and programmed the TV. Then I got ready for school. We had Pop Tarts for breakfast and watched a couple of cartoons. Then I took Lisa back to class and school.

Looney Lisa spent the day on Keni Kohl's desk: At recess we went to the library and looked at some books. Then we did some work in the classroom. We listened to book reports and then our class went to the library to check out books for the next book report. At lunch we ate chips and drank a Snapple. Then at lunch recess we played tag on the field. After lunch we took a class picture to send to Boston. At last recess I walked around in the court yard and talked to my friends. Then just before the bell
rang I gave Lisa to Jessica to take home.
Jessica Renshaw: Today I rode the bus home with Looney Lisa Ladybug. When we got off of the bus we went to my grandma's house and said "hi". Then we went to my house and we watched T.V. for a little while. We went to my room and listened to music and stuck posters on the wall. Then we ate our dinner and listened to music again. Finally we went to bed.

Hi Marjorie,
I am glad to hear you are okay. Amazing to have 24 inches of snow in April!
Here it is absolutely beautiful.....the sun has been out yesterday and today and it is in the high 60's. Flowers are blooming and it seems like spring. Last night the sky was very clear and we could see the comet Hale-Bopp really well. We did have a big wind storm last weekend, however. For us in Maple Valley wind is not good. There are so many trees that often they fall down in the wind and block roads and bring down power lines. All our students are bussed to school because it is a rural community and everyone is spread out. ---Carolyn
Anyway back to Lisa Ladybug's adventures:
April 1, 1997 - Lisa spent the day on Chad Arguello's desk: Looney Lisa and I went to the computer lab at lunch recess and then out to the playfield. During class, the whole class played an April Fool's joke on Ms. Burt. We all told her we didn't have an assignment she had given us and acted as if we didn't know anything about it. It was funny and she laughed. At last recess we jumped rope with some friends. We had a lot of fun.
Lisa went home with Mandy Francis: Hi, my name is Mandy Francis. Looney Lisa Ladybug and I rode the bus home. She met my friend Michelle on the bus. When we got home, I had to do my chores. While I did that, my sister got to know Lisa. Then I came inside and went back outside with Lisa to go ride my horse, Muffy. Lisa liked riding Muffy. Then Lisa and I went inside and made some necklaces. I made Lisa a necklace that says "Lisa". Lisa and I had a roll for dinner and I had some stuffing and green beans. Lisa tried to eat the green beans, but did not like them. When we went to bed, Lisa slept with my stuffed animals. We had a great time.

Evening of April 2, 1997 - Lisa Ladybug went home with Holly Torneby:
Looney Lisa Ladybug and I went to my church and learned about feelings. Lisa met some of my friends: Karen, Natasha, and Becky. Then we came home and celebrated my mom's birthday with a giant birthday cake. It was delicious. Then in the morning we got up early to catch an early bus to school for the zero hour program. I went to reading with Mr. Morgan, our principal. We had fun!
Sat, 5 April, 1997 00:16:48 -0500 (EST)
April 3, 1997 - Looney Lisa spent the day with Justin Whitehead: First thing it the morning I took Lisa to the 6th Grade Science Fair with our class. We looked at many displays. Lisa liked the displays with plants. Then we went back to class and did math. We are studying geometry. After that we worked on our colonial murals. Recess was fun and Lisa met my friends. After lunch my reading group read a book about Samuel Adams and we are planning a play to tell the class about our book. I took Lisa to music with us. After last recess we did silent reading.
Lisa went home with Ruth: My name is Ruth Gomez and I got to take Looney Lisa Ladybug home with me. First we got on the bus and Lisa met Ms. Provin, our bus driver. Then we got home and I finished the T-shirt I was making for her. I made her bed just a little bit more comfortable. I played with her and then we ate. She made new friends with my teddy bear, Snowy. My sister liked her too. We had lots of fun with her and we read a story.

Lisa's last day - April 4, 1997 - Looney Lisa Ladybug spent her last day with several students. Everyone wanted to hold her and play with her before she had to
leave so she did not sit at just one desk. She started out with Norman, but then Brooke, Alicia, Keni, and others took care of her while Norman played football at recess. They thought that would be too hard on Lisa and she might get hurt. Lisa took the spelling test with us and then helped correct math. She was interested in the colorful colonial murals we are making. Many students left for band, but Lisa stayed back in the room to help. After lunch she listened to more stories about colonial people.
Everyone wanted to say goodbye. C.J. brought a maple leaf and cedar branch and Justin laminated them to send as a gift to Ms. Duby's class. Ryan made Lisa a suitcase and hat, and we packed the t-shirt Ruth made and a necklace Jessica made for Lisa. We also got together a lot of information we are sending Boston about Maple Valley area. We really enjoyed having Lisa visit.
She even helped to write our Declaration of Independence to the King!
Thankyou Boston for sending her to visit us.

Hello!
I have been meaning to send this message all week, but I do my e-mail at home and didn't have the address here. We received Lisa last Friday and took her along to the Regional Elementary Science fair last night. I will mail her off to you on Saturday morning. We have limited post office hours and couldn't get her in the mail today. We took a picture of her with the kids on top of one of our giant snowbanks by the school. We have had a couple of nice days in the low 50s that has helped melt some of the snow.
We are not near the flooding in the Red River Valley, but have many friends and relatives there so keep a close eye on all the water. It has been devastating to those in the valley. Some people have been out of their homes for the past two weeks.
Thank you for sharing your school with us.

Lisa arrived safely yesterday afternoon. We think she is adorable and amazed at how good she looks after the long journey from Boston. It must be all the ventilation and cushioning you've provided for her that keeps her in such good shape. Our first group of students will be sending you an update later today!
We are very excited that our turn is finally here. It was well worth the
wait!
Our homepage should be posted by Monday.
Thanks to all of you,
Mrs. Saltzberg

Dear Ms. Duby's class,
We had such a good time with Lisa. All 28 of us, counting Mrs. Saltzberg helped open Lisa's box. We were worried that we put holes in the box with our sharp scissors but saw that the holes were all over and were there so she could breathe. She got here on Wednesday, just in time to go to our music rehearsal. She was comfortable in Jeff's hat during the whole performance. He turned it into a little bed for her so she could see and hear everything. She thought it was funny when Hayley, who was playing the teacher, threw her pen and pad in the air and screamed, "I need a vacation." Lisa loved hearing "Hit the Beach." She said it was her favorite song. She asked for peanuts during "Take me out to the Ballgame." People walked around yelling, "Peanuts! Get your peanuts." Lisa thought they were really selling food and was getting hungry for peanuts.
After school Lisa went to our local museum with Mrs. Saltzberg and her son to learn about Buffalo Grove and pick up some things to send your class. (Mike G., Nikki, Jeff and Jaimee)

Mrs. Saltzberg brought in a surprise today. Lincoln Lobster (whose name was Pinchers before today) is with us to keep Lisa company. We've had a lot of fun with Lisa Ladybug. Lisa's here at a real busy time of year. We have lots of special programs and activities going on now. The first thing we did this morning was go see a traveling concert put on by the Ivy Hall chorus. Ivy Hall is the middle school we will go to next year for fifth
grade. Lisa will go there on a field trip next week.
We took her to recess. One of our friends found a colorful umbrella top and used it as a hat for Lisa. It's just the right size! We had computer lab and showed her how to use the program. She had fun. Lisa heard us practice again, this time in front of the school. She came back again for the final performance and met some of our parents. She probably knows all the songs by now! (Andy, Mike S., Danny K., and Max)

Lincoln and Lisa had a fun day. In the morning, they went to art. We had free drawing and some kids traced Lisa on a sheet of paper. She wasn't scared. She actually felt famous. After that we went to a program to learn all about the summer reading program at the library. The Safety Patrol and Student Council went on a special field trip in the afternoon because they worked so hard all year. Lisa was going to go bowling but she forgot her bowling shoes (all three pairs) and worried that the balls might be too heavy for her. Lincoln went to math and learned how to add and subtract fractions. He is a very quick learner. Lincoln saw the movie 'Journey.' He cried the whole time. (So did Mrs. Saltzberg!) Lincoln and Lisa made our day so much fun. (Becki, Lauren Fi, Michelle, Brooke)

We went to computer lab and opened our new homepage. Lisa and Lincoln saw pictures of themselves and felt real important. When we came back we picked novels and put together a list of projects for our own book reviews. Lisa and Lincoln thought making a mobile and adding a chapter were pretty clever
ideas.
We're not allowed to share our lunches but we did today since Lisa and Lincoln didn't have their own. Lincoln liked Oreos. It was raining AGAIN so we saw Mighty Ducks during recess. Lisa went to math but Lincoln had to stay in a locker. We took him out of the locker and brought him to our play rehearsal. Lincoln and Lisa loved our play. In gym, we split up into our field day teams. The PE teachers want to make sure we're ready for Field Day next week. (Jason L., Jason K., Jamo, Brad)

Tuesday morning we had a program on bicycle safety. Lisa learned how to wear a helmet but we can't find one her size. Lincoln and Lisa enjoyed swinging on swings during recess. It was finally nice out! They had fun learning about geometry in math. Lisa said it seemed easy. We think she must have had this lesson earlier in someone else's class. We had early dismissal so our teachers could work on report cards and meet with their teams.
