Sample "Mailing List Subscription" Message

Greetings -

Welcome to the Looney Lobsters Loves Regional Literature Mailing List. We are pleased to have you share your local literature with us and other participants as our Looneys travel across the United States.

In advance, we would like to thank you for showing tenderness and caring to our Looneys as you welcome them into your schools and homes.

One of the purposes of the looney98 mailing list is to encourage discussions about the read aloud picture books we will be sharing on a daily basis during school weeks.

To actively prepare your class for participation in this project, I will include the suggested book titles for read alouds in the participant booklet as well as online at:

http://inquiryunlimited.org/tech/looney98/titles98.html

My class and I hope that you actively participate in our discussions - sharing likes, dislikes, theme comparisons of varying books, writing styles of authors, styles of illustrators, and original discussions.

Or perhaps, you might prefer to lurk, get all the information about Looney's adventures, but not respond to the mailing list.

Teachers or students who are interested in the looney98 discussions are invited to join us. We have not previously used a mailing list as vehicle to promote the sharing of critical thinking based on literature. We look to all of you for suggestions for effective used of this list.

In addition to our read aloud sharing, the mailing list is an effective tool to keep all participants in the Looneys Love Regional Literature project informed of the daily activities experienced by our Looneys at host schools.

We hope that you and your students will enjoy their participation in our Looney Lobsters Love Regional Literature project.

Now for the use of the mailing list:

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to looney98@lee.boston.k12.ma.us

This is called "send mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed.

This address (looney98@lee.boston.k12.ma.us) is also called the "list address." You should never send any command to that address, as it would simply be distributed as a normal message to all the people who have subscribed.

All commands must be send to the "LISTSERV address."

Do not"Reply" to the messages you received on this list unless you intend to post the reply to the whole list. If you want to respond to an individual who posted a message, "Send" a message rather than "Replying" and name that individual's email address only.

You may leave this list at any time via a process known simply as unsubcribing. To do this, send a message to listserv@lee.boston.k12.ma.us

Leave the subject line of your message blank, and be sure that the body of the message consists of a single line which says

unsubscribe looney 98

To get more information on LISTSERV commands, send a message consisting only of the word "help" to the listserv@lee.boston.k12.ma.us

That's about all you need to know for now. Remember, to send messages to the list, you send a message to the list address above just as you would send a message to any other Internet address. Everyone on the list will receive a copy of your message (including yourself.) Anyone who wishes to respond will be able to do so, either publicly to the list or privately to your e-mail address (which is listed as the originator of the message).

You may leave the list at any time by sending an "unsubscribe looney 98" command to listserv@lee.boston.k12.ma.us

If you experience any difficulties related to this mailing list, feel free to contact the list manager, Marjorie Duby, at mduby@boston.k12.ma.us and I'll do my best to take care of your problem.
