Because of its location in an isolated area, Sam Houston had previously sent Jim Bowie, a volunteer, to evacuate San Antonio and to destroy the Alamo. He felt the fort and area could not be protected.

But, Bowie and the officer in charge at the Alamo had decided to stay and fortify it. They remembered the success they had in battle previously.

Now, the Texan settlers in the area sought shelter in the walls of the Alamo and determined to fight for their freedom and for their independence!
