William B. Travis was the commanding officer. We came to find out that he had only a handful of people inside with him. He immediately requested aid.

He sent a message addressed "To the People of Texas and All Americans in the world" seeking forces and pledging "I shall never surrender or retreat . . . Victory or death!"
