During the fighting at the Alamo, 150 miles away at Washington-on-the-Brazos, a handful of Texans met as a national convention to sign a Texas Declaration of Independence and form an ad-interim government headed by David G. Burnet.

Then, knowing that the Alamo had fallen, they rushed home.
