We finally left the snow area. However, as it had been a dry season, we now found ourselves traveling where there was not much grass for the animals. There was not much food for the men. Rations were cut in half!

The men began to eat mesquite and berries. They got sick with dysentery and diarrhea. They were exhausted. They began to desert. Conditions were not very good!
